Safe School Ambassadors

SSA Anti-Bullying

Put downs, harassment and fighting will be on the decrease thanks to Ernie Pyle Middle School students who have been trained as peacemakers. In 2016-2017, we will continue to work towards this goal by selecting students to participate in workshops during the school day.

EPMS is one of more than 900 public and private schools nationwide that have adopted this program, but only one of three middle schools in Albuquerque Public School District.  Ernie Pyle also was one of the first three middle schools in APS to adopt the program.

Rather than acting as peer mediators for the entire school, the Ambassadors focus on their own groups of friends. “Students see, hear and know what adults don’t. They can intervene in ways adults can’t,” said Community Matters trainer John Linney, “but usually they don’t. They often fear retaliation or simply don’t know what to do.” Now the Ambassadors have the skills to notice, act and support their peers.
